Cleaning ostomy bags

Categories: Ostomy Bag

Question:

Pam: I use a squirt bottle with water only. I remember my home ET nurse telling me that if I squirt the water up high into the bag, (I have a two-piece Convatec appliance), it might leak.  Well… I’ve squirted up high and it’s never leaked.  The only leakage I’ve had, and that’s only been once in 3 years, is when the bag got too full and it came to the top of the bottom part of the seal and it just happened to not be snapped totally shut. ***Kathleen***

Response:

Agree with you Barbara … it is no necessary, but I find a psychological value in rinsing plus it takes about 1/4 of the time that wiping the opening clean before reclasping takes.   Also, I find virtually nothing to cleanup when changing the Wafer or Bag … and I get 8 to 10 days on Wafer and change bag every 3 days (could go longer) as a rule. Haven’t been around for a while … trust all is well with you … Steve.

Thanks to all who commented on my question of what to use to clean ostomy bag. I was taught to use a solution when I got my ostomy in ‘85, but have found that just water does great — thanks to your suggestions. Another question:  has anyone been told that if you do clean your bag out, the seal will weaken if you let the water go up too high? Pam

An appliance with  convexity should be able to help. How overweight are you? I’m a large person and I use convexity and a belt. I don’t have any leak problems. I am unable to use a two-piece because it leaks were I fold. I’d suggest you see an ET nurse for a new appliance fitting. — Barbara Skoglund (I) Barbara.A.Skoglun…@tc.umn.edu Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Have you tried using a modern odorproof, disposible appliance? Other than an occasional rinse with water — which isn’t necessary, just a matter of personal choice,  I don’t have to do any pouch cleaning. — Barbara Skoglund (I) Barbara.A.Skoglun…@tc.umn.edu Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. I use a product that I purchased from Markay … see Website … WWW.MARKAY.COM Simply, it is a hose with a valve on it that attachesto the Bathroom Sink and I simply flush my appliance after dumping while still seated on the comode … very quick / very clean. Cost was $79.95 + $8.95 for a bag of tips (wands as they call them) + shipping.   Fast service and an eagerness to help … EMAIL me if you have any question. Product is now sold by suppliers like AOS (American Ostomy Supply) also. I am a user … not a principle.

Have had ileostomy for many years and, since switching from a permanent pouch that had to be cleaned between uses, have never rinsed or cleaned pouch.  Wear for 5 days and toss.  Use M-9 drops if I want extra odor protection.  What is the purpose of rinsing a pouch?–five minutes later it begins to fill again with the same old stuff!  Stan. Response:

I don’t ever rinse my pouches, either.  I "religiously" rinsed at first — I was having trouble with leaking, and the ET nurse suggested that maybe all the rinsing was reducing my wear time. My wear time is much better now that I don’t rinse. I don’t find any odor problem not rinsing, and, with an ileostomy, there’s constant output, so there’s constantly something in the pouch.  Keeping it rinsed was always a losing battle. I’ve used Ivory dishwashing liquid in water to wash out pouches. Elaine In article <19990530142613.10265.00000133@ng- fl1.aol.com>, phal…@aol.com says… > I clean my bag with a cleansing liquid I get from the pharmacy;

Hi everyone new person here again.  I am overweight and after my bladder removal sugery  I split back open about 8 inches  and was like for a yr.  Now because of this , and because I was allergic to everything because of my main disease that caused the surgery I kind of shift every bit of re routeing that the doctor did to make my a urostomy with my ilium.  Because of this I also have a inward stoma.  They have not been able to fix it because I had a stoke right after and had previously gained about 80+ pounds or so while in bed for about a yr. because of surgery.  What I would like to know is one :  does weight and large abdoman have any bearing on wear time of the bags and two is there a surgery that can , well pull the stoma out again so it allows the urine to fall down into the bag instead of going under the flange.  Now, I have used every thing know to man to keep the dumb things on, keep from yeast infections, and so on.  I need answers.  Please help!!!!  To those who have written me in the past , thank you.  No idea is to small or to gross to try.  I go through about a bag/flange daily and sometimes more.  I have had my surgery for 6 yrs now.  So far the insurance company has complied with the doctors unlimited status on my RX for products.  But, now you know that could always change.  Medicare is secondary because I am on SS disability and they will only cover 10 bags of the 30 to 50 I use a month.  I have worked with several ET nurses and dermotologist and taken anti itch and rash meds galore.  I am also on about 25 different meds as well as several steroids.  Could this to have any bearing on my problems. I give your name to my first grandchild if you can only help.  LOL, LOL. I AM FEMALE AND 37.  SURGERY WAS DONE AT 31 .  I HAVE MASTOCYTOSIS AND HAVE HAD TWO STROKES BY THIRTY FIVE.   HELP PLEASE HELP/ CHEERS PAM/KS PS.  I SEEM TO NEVER GET INFORMATION ON OSTOMY GROUP MEETINGS IN KS.  I HAVE TALKED TO THE NICE LADY WHO RUNS IT , BUT HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HER IN A LONG TIME, AND NO PH NUMBER. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -"Elaine B.
