Protecting Embarrasing Sounds From Ileostomy

Categories: Ostomates

Question:

Hi Ruth– What really works for me is to eat 1/2 a bannana twice a day. Seldom any noises, maybe twice a week a noise, seldom at work. The day I skip the bannana, I can hear the difference. Everyone is different, but this may help someone. P.S.–thanks for your nice e-mail a couple weeks ago–you sound like a truly gracious person—- Best —  Roy   –a happy ileostomy camper— – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -RuthB30289 wrote: > LOL!I had my biggest problem when I first got ostomy, but after awhile it got > better. This seems to be a common problem,my answer=tea, with caffeine, just > regular tea-hot,it will calm stomach.I must admit as strange as this may sound > I take pride in,not having any odor. Now if someone farts around me,Im > disgusted, lol.

Response:

Well, I don’t know about that.  Mostly I fizzle, but sometimes I make LOUD noises, very much sounding like a fart.  I know of one person who describes his as like a Harley starting up beside you and fading off into the distance Romane Susan Reed <noe…@erols.com> wrote in article <7evih8$es…@autumn.news.rcn.net>… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> We ileostomates don’t fart we fizzle. > Susan R. > Manassas, VA

Of course, all ET tell us to place your arm/hand over the stoma to muffle the noise. Sooo!, that make Napoleon the first Ostomate, he is always pictured with his hand in his coat!!  ;-) In article <ekEf8a2g#GA.340@upnetnews03>, "T&D" <davidnt…@email.msn.com> writes:

I found that to change body position  (usualy bending slightly) quickly, works well. Or try pressing hard on your stoma with a flat open hand. Avoid food rich in fibre too. It is very easy to be self-conscious about sounds coming from your ileostomy, especially if it is new.  Over the 15 years that I have had my ileostomy, it hasn’t made too many loud noises, and I’ve found when it does, most people don’t notice anyway.  Many, many people have loud sounds come from their abdomens, even louder than the ileostomy sounds that you get on occasion, so it’s perfectly natural, and that’s what most people will think, that your abdomen is making noise.  Perfectly natural.  I have heard many a sound coming from other people that has been much louder than the sound coming from my ileostomy, especially that of flatulence, which is another sound that’s perfectly natural; however, embarassing even more so to the person making the sound. The only people who make any reference to the sounds coming out of my ileostomy are my family members, and we all have a good laugh about it and make jokes. After all, a good laugh now and then is very healthy.  My great comeback to my family is "At least I can’t fart anymore."  I mean, geez, you should hear some of them! So sit back, relax, and blame it on your tummy growling.  After all, that’s where it’s coming from! Crystal Scotti — "The Bag Lady" Ileostomy 15 years, married 13 years, and 2 children. You know, everyone says we ostomates "can’t fart anymore" but I don’t agree. Isn’t a ‘fart’ simply when gas is expelled?  If so, we ostomates still ‘fart’ just not when we want it to. Ruth, when someone farts around me now I just tell them they are "showing off" and  because they know I can’t do that!       Thank goodness for humour, huh? Yvonne

I read in the Ostomy Australia magazine of a person who made "loud noises" when about to get off a bus. The person he was sitting next to states he/she was probably one of the few on the bus who knew what was happening. Anyhow, the person said aloud to all and sundry something like "Gosh, it’s hard being an alien, the plumbing gives it all away".  Apparently people on the bus went pale :) Just out of interest, I just tonight found the UK site, Digestive Disorders Foundation, at http://www.digestivedisorders.org.uk/, and there is a 5 page leaflett there on "Windy Symptoms".  Aimed mainly at "normal" people, those with IBD may get some clues, those of us with an ileostomy may get some ideas, those with a colostomy should thus have some cluey ideas :)  (Sorry folks, my warped sense of humor strikes again). In the 2+ years I’ve had my ostomy, it rarely makes sounds loud enough for anyone to hear. On those few occasions it did, I just pretended my stomach was growling — since that’s what it sounded like.
