Hello Everyone!    Thanks very much for all the posts!!  Your information has been very very valuable!  I will try the air in the bag after emptying it. This week has been trouble free, know on wood.  Thanks again everyone! Ralf Loserth

My best guess is it is your medication that is causing the output to be thicker. Are you on any opium based pain relief? i.e. morphine, codeine etc, these cause constipation in normal circumstances and thicker outputs in ostomists. I have had a colostomy since early Dec, 01. I had my first accident last night. Exactly what you described. I woke up at 5:00 and realized something was wrong. Unbelievably it didn’t make ANY mess at all. The "stuff" was all stuck to the wafer and looked undisturbed. I checked the sheets and they were clean. Luck was on my side for the first accident. I happened to see my ostomy nurse today and she told me Pam or vegetable oil would help. Also a little air in the bag doesn’t hurt. I didn’t even try to go back to sleep as I was a little paranoid that I had done something wrong. Thanks to my ostomy nurses reassurance and the answers to this post I will sleep like a baby tonight. If you have thick output (which is a GOOD thing), after you empty be sure that there is some air in your pouch before you close it.  If there isn’t the wafer will undermine very easily. Air in the bag will compress and prevent the undermining of the wafer. Larry — Larry Finch ::finc…@bellatlantic.net   la…@prolifics.com ::LarryFi…@aol.com         (whew!) N 40
