Iliostomy vs. colostomy
Question:
Basically, the difference is in what part of the insides are brought out through the stomach wall. A colostomy has a part of the colon (large bowel) brought out through the stomach wall. An ileostomy has part of the ileum (the conecting piece between the small colon and the large colon) brought out through the stomach wall. Hi. My mom has had a colostomy a year ago with not one single problem. Suddenly last Friday she developed a blockage, possibly due to a hernia. Well, after much consulting, the surgeon decided to fix the hernia, close (repair) the colostomy, which is on the left side, and to place an iliostomy on the right side for two months. Then, after two months, repair (undo) this. Can someone enlighten me as to the difference between the two. BTW, she is having surgery tomorrow at 3:00, and just tonight, she was placed back on a "nutrition" bag. We are not sure whether or not she will need this nutrition when she returns home. Thanks for any help or info. Robin T.

Well, hospitals routinely hook up an IV before doing much of anything, just in case and to serve as an easy route to administer meds–and if the gut is going to be tinkered with, the IV will provide nutrition and especially water without having to swallow it for a few hours or even longer.
