Hartman's Pouch
Question:
I have a Hartmans pouch. It was made initially so that the colostomy might be reconnected if I ever get where I heal. I have a stoma about4 inches from my belly button where stool is excretted. The intestine below the stoma was folded over anddrains the rest of the colon to the rectum, My surgeon tells me that it can drain some mucous and occasionally passw gas. This did not happen until 3 monthas past surgery and I had forgotten and was concerned when it did. I also has the hartman pouch open up about 4 weeks after the first abscess surgery and passed a lot of blood and my husband saw suture material in it and I was flown by ER helicopter 200 miles for ER surgery. I have complications where I do not heal like the regular normal pt so this should;nt happen to most people . I just mention it bedcause no one told me that it could happen and I was rather anxious when it did andwas in septic shock and had numerous blood transfusions as the result. I at this point don;t have a clue if my surgeon is going to risk taking me back to surgery to put me back toghether, he keeps saying we will discuss it at the point you are more nutriuonally sound and healthy and I can be sure that you will heal. cherrilynne,RN,44,Reiter’s/AS/ Pulmonary Embolis with lung abcsess and deep vein thrombosis – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -sst…@my-dejanews.com wrote: > A Hartman pouch or loop is sometimes called a loop ileostomy. A Hartman pouch or loop is sometimes called a loop ileostomy. It is made by bringing a loop of colon up thru the wall of the stomach to the outside, then is cut across the top so you have two openings. The opening from "upstream" is what carries waste out and into the bag or appliance. The ‘downstream" opening is the rest of the colon that is still attached to the rectum and it is that part that is referred to as the Hartman Pouch. The second opening generally drains a little bit of mucous and is sometimes called a mucous fistula. This surgery is mostly performed to rest the downside of the colon for various reasons and is usually reattached. Some people do however have permanant loop ileostomies. These are a little more difficult to place an appliance around because they are a little bigger and there may be scar tissue or creases in the area. Hi Richard, A Hartman’s pouch is what is left at the rectal end after the colon is cut and brought out through the abdomen in a colostomy. It is non-functional, only emitting mucous from time to time. It is usually left there in order to hook the colon back up at a later date. Have a good one, Joy
