Hi Areta, Tell your brother there is an internal deodorant he can use and also an external one which is used in the colostomy bag.  M9 Drops by Hollister are expensive but I use them whenever I’m going out anywhere.  They cost around $17 for an 8 oz. bottle.  The internal deodorant is called Devrom Chewable Tablets and cost around $12 for 100 tablets if you order them from the company that makes them.  (Bob – if you are really only paying $7 for 500, PLEASE SHARE YOUR SECRET.)  You should be able to get the M9 Drops where you get ostomy supplies.  You can order the Devrom tablets from The Parthenon Co. at 1-800-453-8898.  I have trouble remembering to chew the tablets with my meals so can’t tell you from my own experience that they work but have heard from other ostomates that they work great. As for the noise, all I know is it depends on what I eat. If I eat gassy foods or fried foods, I have a lot of noise.  If I eat correctly (which is seldom) then I don’t have much of a problem.  ~~~~Pat Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. The reference to the M-9 Odor Elinination Drops may be misleading to some.  I little of it goes a long way – only need a drop or two in the pouch each time the pouch is emptied.  Recommend one purchase a smaller quanity, especially for first trying it.  An 1/2 oz bottle #HO7714 costs about $3.50.  A 1 oz #HO7715 about $4.50.  A 4 oz #HO7716 for about $9.50.  These drops are very effective, so go for the small bottle first, then save the bottle for refill.  The small bottle is handy for carrying with you. Earl, Some people are able to get away with using just a few drops of M9 each time they empty but from what I’ve read and heard, not very many can do this.  I have a very high output due to short bowel syndrome and I would use a whole 8 oz. bottle in a day or 2 if I put enough drops in to get rid of the odor every time I emptied. That’s why I only use it when I go out.  If Areta’s brother doesn’t have to empty very often, then he should be able to use it regularly. It takes a little experimenting to find out how much to use.  Some people have to use 20 to 30 drops so it can be very expensive to use all the time.  It is great stuff, though, and I am so happy I found it.  ~~~~Pat In article <N.061299.083141.37@Default>,   cen09…@centuryinter.net (Earl) wrote: > The reference to the M-9 Odor Elinination Drops may be misleading to > some.  I little of it goes a long way – only need a drop or two in the > pouch each time the pouch is emptied.

Yes, Earl, that’s exactly what I do, I carry the tiny bottle with me in my purse and just refill it from the larger bottles that I use at home. Have a good one, Joy

Correction! 100 Tablet bottles. /Bob

Has he thought of having a bathroom exhaust fan installed and keeping the bathroom door shut until the odor is out of the house?  WIZARD now makes an aerosol bathroom spray that breaks down the odor instead of covering it up. There are also deodorizing drops you can put in your bag called M-9 drops. There are also chlorophyll tablets you can swallow once or twice a day. Last but not least, gas is the same whether you are in a wheelchair or not. Control of stomach muscles cannot control your stoma or intestines from expelling gas only a sphincter muscle can do that. David (C) About the gas noises.  they can be really embarrassing and probably the only things you can do are watch your diet and keep track of which foods give you gas and then avoid those foods.  Broccoli, beans, cabbage, carbonated drinks, chewing with your mouth open or while talking (makes you swallow air) all contribute to a gas problem. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Areta wrote in message <376372b4.157790509@news>… >How do you reduce the odour with a colostomy?   My brother has a >colostomy, I don’t live with him, but apparently when he empties his >bag the odour invades the entire house.  I seem to remember reading >about a pill that reduces the odour significantly, but I can’t >remember what it is called. >And he also has a terrible time with noise from gas.  He constantly >has to press against it to reduce the noise around company.  Is there >anything that can be done about these two problems?  Or does it just >vary from person to person?  He is in a wheelchair and I am wondering >if people on their feet have more control over the noise their ostomy >makes because they have control of their stomach muscles.

But…… I can use them every time I empty or put on a new pouch, and the bottle will last me for months. They really do go a long way. Have a good one, Joy

Hi Earl, I envy your wife!  I have had my colostomy for 22 yrs and right after I got it, I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that the odor from a colostomy is worse than from an ileostomy.  I don’t know if this is true or not since everyone I have asked recently doesn’t know. Have you ever heard anything about this? Right after I started using the M9 Drops, I asked on a couple of the ostomy boards about the amount other ostomates were using since the recommended 4 to 8 drops weren’t doing anything for me.  That’s how I found out some people have to use 20 to 30 drops.  One thing I have found out is when I use the drops, after initially putting them in my bag, for the next couple of emptyings I only need to use a small amount.  I agree about keeping the small bottle.  I carry one in a plastic baggie in my purse.  They are a very convenient size. No, I have never tried the high output appliances from Convatec.  I use the Convatec Surfit Natura 12" drainable.  About 90% of the time, my output is liquid enough to pass through a tube.  Are you talking about for night time drainage?  I don’t think I’d feel secure enough to use a drainage system because I’d be afraid of the one time it wouldn’t be liquidy enough.  I also have a urostomy and quit using a night time drainage bag when I realized that I was getting up so often at night to empty my colostomy bag that I could just empty my urostomy bag at the same time.  This took me awhile to realize since sometimes I’m pretty slow to catch on to things. I’m surprised.  My wife has had her ileostomy since the early sixties and has experimented with different products.  She found that M-9 Drops did the trick and she uses only one or two drops per empty. But everyone is different.  If, after buying a small bottle, one needs more quanity, a graduation to a larger bottle may be in order.  But save the small bottle because it is so handy to carry with you. Pat, since you have short bowel syndrome, would you tell me what appliance you are using?  And have you tried the high output from ConvTec?  Is your effluent liquidy enough to pass through a tube?  I am seeking first-hand information about how people with that malady cope. Devrom tablets….they are about $7 a bottle of 500 but work great. Two a day does it for me. Should mention I have an ileostomy not colostomy… /Bob /Bob

He should try the pepto bismal tablets they work. also M-9 drops into the pouch itself works fine for me.  Clay

How do you reduce the odour with a colostomy?   My brother has a colostomy, I don’t live with him, but apparently when he empties his bag the odour invades the entire house.  I seem to remember reading about a pill that reduces the odour significantly, but I can’t remember what it is called.   And he also has a terrible time with noise from gas.  He constantly has to press against it to reduce the noise around company.  Is there anything that can be done about these two problems?  Or does it just vary from person to person?  He is in a wheelchair and I am wondering if people on their feet have more control over the noise their ostomy makes because they have control of their stomach muscles.
